I Have Been Here Before

Whitsun, just before the Second World War.  The mysterious Doctor Gortler arrives at the Black Bull Inn in Yorkshire, expecting to find there a married couple, the husband somewhat older than his wife, and another gentleman.  When told that three ladies from Manchester are due to arrive instead, he departs muttering darkly, "It must be the wrong year".  But then.......
