The Royal Hunt of the Sun
The Royal Hunt of the Sun tells the almost incredible (yet true) story of the conquest of the mighty inca Empire of Peru by a handful of Spaniards under Pizarro in the 16th century. The Incas had peace, stability and gold. The Spaniards had courage, avarice and guns.
Of his play, Peter Shaffer writes "Why did I write it? To make colour? Yes. To make a spectacle? Yes. To make magic? Yes..... I deeply wanted to create, by means of austere and rich, an experience that was entirely and only theatrical." He adds "the play is an attempt to define the concept of god: a nice modest little theme for any play to tackle!".
