La Ronde
Famously filmed by Max Ophls in 1950, this is Schnitzler's popular roundelay of love, as practiced in Old Vienna and as told in ten interlocking dialogues. Each of the ten characters, from various walks of life, appears twice, linking consecutive scenes; beginning and ending with a 'lady of the night'. The play is erotic but never prurient. Grounded in Freud, it is sometimes clinically serious but often very funny.
