The Thrill of Love by Amanda Whittington

Directed by Susan Conte

This sharp funny observant play tells the story of Ruth Ellis, her time working the Soho drinking clubs in the early 1950’s and her prosecution for murder.  It was an age of sexual double standards but these night club hostesses were on the up and knew what they had to do to get there!  Ruth was the last woman to be hanged in Britain, after a two day trial, and this harsh sentence was carried out despite national protests. Why didn’t Ruth defend herself?   There will be live linking jazz songs in this production and the opportunity for all/any of the women to sing the opening number with Camille if able, but not essential.

Ruth Ellis  (25 – 35 – should look 28) a slim nervous woman yet glamorous and will need to be able to wear a Marilyn Monroe style wig and carry off the blonde peroxide look.  Some challenging acting moments and her story throughout.

Jack Gale – a London Detective (middle aged +) a London plod who has worked his way up from the Vice Squad in Soho to be key investigator in the case of Ruth Ellis.   A multi layered and central role.

Sylvia Shaw – a night club manageress (middle aged yet still glamorous in a mature way) this fine, sharp character has wonderful dialogue and tough responses.  She shows Ruth how to run a Soho nightclub but is nobody’s fool.  A lead role throughout.

Vickie Martin – a “model and actress”  (25 – 35, should look 20’s) joins the club to work with Ruth.  Ambitious to be an actress like Diana Dors.  Stylish.  Preferably not blonde.

Doris Judd  (25 – 40 should look 20’s) – naive, mousy follower of what happens at the Club.  Slightly in awe of more glamorous hostesses while she cleans up.

Some rehearsals in December but very busy rehearsals from Sunday 4th January so make sure that, if cast, you are available no later than 4th January.

(First read through with whole cast planned for Wednesday 3rd December).
