The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh
Director: Kelly Wood
The Pillowman, which won the Olivier Award for best new play in 2004, is a darkly dramatic comic play from Martin McDonagh.
Once upon a time, the police have arrested a writer of dark and disturbing children’s stories. You see, something very strange has been happening to the children in the area…they are being killed in ways described within Katurian’s stories…including those stories that haven’t even been published….
But the state controls the media and the papers, so maybe no children have been killed at all. Maybe it’s an excuse to get rid of a writer they do not like.
Ariel – 'Bad cop who only follows the morals of Justice' – maybe. The bulldog out of the two detectives. Fierce and eager to torture anyone on the wrong side of the law. Vicious, inflexible and unprincipled. Maybe. Fiercely protective of children. M/F 30s - 50s
Tupolski – 'Good cop who only follows the rules' – maybe. Intelligent, quirky, sardonic, funny and heroic for the community despite the police brutality. Maybe. M/F 30s - 50s
Katurian – The writer. Writes dark and twisted stories. Probably innocent of what they are accusing him of. Maybe. M 20s - 30s.
Michal – The writer’s brother. Simple minded – mentally damaged. A gentle, childlike soul who wouldn’t hurt a fly. Maybe. M 20s - 30s.
