The Kitchen Sink by Tom Wells

Directed by Harry Medawar

The original 2011 production of this gentle comedy at the Bush Theatre won multiple awards, including the Simon Gray Award for best new play.  The setting is the kitchen of Kath and Martin’s terraced house in Withernsea on the Yorkshire coast.  The time is 2010.  Woolworths has closed and the future looks bleak but even the darkest clouds have silver linings...

There are five parts:

Billy (M: playing age range: late teens to early 20s; medium-sized role): 'The last lad I kissed actually ducked' - an artist, aspiring to art school.

Kath (F: playing age range: late 30s to early 50s; medium-sized role): 'I’ve been a dinner lady for twenty-five years. I’ve cooked chips every day for twenty-five years … I used to be a sex kitten' - a lollipop lady married to Martin and Billy and Sophie’s mother.

Martin (M: playing age range: late 30s to early 50s; medium-sized role) – 'I’m a milkman ... I do milkmanly things' - a good man married to Kath and Billy and Sophie’s father.

Pete (M: playing age range: late teens to early 20s; medium-sized role): 'I just want to be a plumber, and I’m doing it, I’m actually doing it. Found something I love doing' - a plumber in love with Sophie.

Sophie (F: playing age range: late teens to early 20s; medium-sized role): 'Bit feisty, this one, eh?' - a milkman’s assistant, studying ju-jitsu and possibly in love with Pete.
