The Linden Tree is one of JB Priestley’s finest plays. Written and set in 1947, this is a wonderfully detailed insight into family life after the conclusion of WWII. It is an intimate, multi-layered drama with timely comic touches.

The play centres on Professor Linden and his impending retirement, and is set in the Study of his home in the fictional provincial city of Burmanley.

Professor Robert Linden  (M: Playing Age: 60s) A University Professor “obviously tired, but  with a certain youthfulness”

Isabel Linden                       (F: Playing Age: 50s) His Wife, “brisk and vivacious”

Rex Linden                           (M: Playing Age: 30s) His Son, “Good Looking, cool, humorous, very self-confident”

Dr Jean Linden                    (F: Playing Age: 20s-30s) His eldest Daughter, “professional, clear-cut and rather cold at first glance”

Dinah Linden                        (F: Playing Age: Youthful 18) His Youngest Daughter, “A very clear eager personality, quite different from anyone else in the play”

Edith Westmore                  (F: Playing Age: Early 20s) A Student, “Rather shabby, but not  altogether unattractive. Likeable, but rather pathetic”
