Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune
Directed by Harry Medawar

Frankie and Johnny were sweethearts, Oh Lordy, how they did love.
Swore to be true to each other, True as the stars above.

First performed in 1987 at the Manhattan Theatre Club with Oscar winners Kathy Bates and F Murray Abraham, Terrence McNally’s warm and funny two-hander is a romantic comedy for adults - very much for adults. The play takes place over one Saturday night and is set in Frankie’s one-room apartment in a walk-up tenement in the west 50s of New York. Frankie is a waitress and Johnny is a short order cook working in the same restaurant. After six weeks, they have finally ‘connected’. Tonight, with the help of Debussy and a late night DJ, Frankie and Johnny will find out if they have reached the beginning of love. Or the end.

Our production runs from 5th- 11th May 2019 and rehearsals will start in January / February.

* Frankie (F: playing age range: late 30s - early 40s; large role):   ‘Everybody has armour. They’d be dead if they didn’t.’  Striking but not necessarily conventional good looks. She has a sense of humour and a fairly tough exterior. She is also frightened and can be very hard to reach.

* Johnny (M: playing age range: 40s; large role):  ‘I’m a romantic. I think everything looks better in half-light and shadows.’  Johnny’s best feature is his personality. He works at it. He is in good physical condition.

The production will use the 1988 script, published by Dramatists Play Service, and audition pieces will be available from the director from 1st December.

Anyone wanting to obtain the audition pieces or simply to find out more about the play and the planned approach for this production is welcome to contact me (see below).
