Gentle fiction by J.M. Barrie to mark 100 years since the end of WW1

The Old Lady Shows her Medals

Mrs. Dowey is entertaining three other charwomen for tea. They all talk proudly about their sons in the army. However, Mrs. Dowey has no son – she’s been pretending after seeing the name of a soldier, Kenneth Dowey, in the newspaper. But then the curate arrives with Kenneth in tow. It turns out that Kenneth has no family; but will he agree to spend his leave with her so that she gets her long wished for experience of mothering a boy?

Mrs. Dowey - age range 35-60

Mrs. Twymley, Mrs. Mickleham and Mrs. Haggerty – the 3 other Charladies age-range 35-60

Mr. Willings, The Curate – any age

Kenneth Dowey, the ‘Son’ – age range 18-30

A Well Remembered Voice

Mrs. Don is holding a séance to contact her son, Dick, killed in action. Her husband, a non-believer watches quietly from the side-lines. After the séance, a well-remembered voice is heard as Dick returns to talk with his father.

Mr. Don and Mrs. Grace Don - age range 35-50

Dick and Laura (Dick’s Girlfriend) – age range 18-25

Major Armitage and Mrs. Rogers – Family Friends – age 35+ plus

I’m very much looking forward to the reading and auditions for these delightful one-act plays, both of which focus on family relationships and the ways in which the lives of individuals were so deeply affected by the events of the Great War.

I’m very fortunate that Rosy Addison-Dunne has offered to take on the role of Production Assistant for me. All other roles are currently vacant so if you’d like to get involved with set design, sound, lights, props or wardrobe, please do get in touch with Rosy or me.
