A Visit from Miss Prothero & An Englishman Abroad by Alan Bennett
Directed by Jenny Hobson

Recently retired, widower Arthur Dodsworth is living quietly and relatively happily with his memories and in the company of his budgie Millie.  Happily, that is, until he has an unwelcome visitor in the shape of his ex-secretary Miss Prothero - a vindictive woman who takes pride in putting people down.

Characteristically Alan Bennett uses a fusion of humour and pathos to turn our laughter to tears in a short but compelling piece of theatre.

• Arthur Dodsworth: mid sixties

• Miss Prothero:  preferably 50s, but a degree of flexibility may be considered.

Both characters must have Yorkshire accents.

The true story of a meeting between elegant actress Coral Browne and Guy Burgess, the seedy exile who at the time was living in a dingy Moscow flat. Bennett was inspired to write the play after Coral Browne told him of the incident which occurred during her visit to the USSR with the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in 1958.

• Guy Burgess: 40/50, required to sing, but does not have to be particularly musical!

• Coral Browne: mid 40s

• Tolya (Burgess’s male lover): 30s

• Male Shop assistant 1

• Male Shop assistant 2

The shop assistant roles are very small, and could possibly played by females.

A strong technical team is in place to support this production, and all interested actors will be considered for these great roles.
