 After Mrs Rochester Minimize

Written By Poly Teale
Directed by Michelle Hood
Performance Dates 21st to 27th March. See Diary for detailed timings.
Summary

After Mrs Rochester, tells the story of Jean Rhys who is best known for her novel The Wide Sargasso Sea.

The play looks back at the reclusive playwright’s life and her struggle with the imaginary demons that tormented her, such as the characters from Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. This compelling drama interweaves with the storyline of Jane Eyre and, in particular, the character of Bertha Mason (the first Mrs Rochester) who is the madwoman locked in the attic. Rhys’s obsession with her alter ego, Bertha, became the catalyst for The Wide Sargasso Sea.

The novel The Wide Sargasso Sea was adapted in 2006 for BBC television and starred Rebecca Hall as Bertha and Rafe Spall as Mr Rochester.

Please note that this play is not suitable for under 12’s
